ABOUT US
Korea burst onto the global scene in the past few years thanks to ‘Gangnam style’ and K-pop. Today Korea is one of the world’s largest economies; the most wired nation in the world; and considered increasingly ‘cool’ by many who are mesmerized by the the Hallyu wave of music, soap operas, and fashion. Some of the leading sports figures in the world come from Korea and are internationally known. But this was not always the case….
Within a relatively short period of time starting in the late 1960s, Korea transformed itself from one of the world’s poorest countries, devastated by a brutal war and with few natural resources, into an economic powerhouse and global leader with a commitment to helping other countries facing development challenges.
What is Friends of Korea? Why join?
We are a group of individuals – American and Korean – in the US and elsewhere, interested in fostering cultural awareness and friendship between Americans and Koreans. If you have an interest in learning more about Korea, its history and culture and you want to meet people who share your interest and passion for Korea, this is the organization for you.
As a member, you will learn about exhibits and other events of interest and be invited to receptions and other events co-sponsored by Friends of Korea. You will have an opportunity to meet some fascinating people who have lived and worked in Korea and who share your interest in learning more. So, if you were a Peace Corps volunteer, Fulbright scholar, KOICA volunteer, English language teacher with the EPIK program or on your own, member of the US Armed Forces, missionary, student of contemporary Korean politics, culture, foreign policy, or Korean émigré or adoptee consider becoming part of the Friends of Korea community today.
