KOICA JOINS AS FIRST ORGANIZATIONAL PARTNER

KOICA was founded in 1991 with the mission of fighting global poverty. The establishment of KOICA and Korea's decision to become an active player in the field of international assistance and development marked a significant transition from a recipient nation to that of a donor nation.
One component of Korea's development assistance programs is the deployment of volunteers through World Friends Korea (WFK). Similar in approach to the United State Peace Corps, World Friends Korea is focused on three clearly defined goals:
Volunteers mostly work in five thematic areas (education, health, public administration, industry & energy, and rural development) for capacity building and provision of essential public services. WFK operates diverse support programs to ensure and underpin the effectiveness of volunteer activities. Volunteers can propose their own mini-projects to immediately address challenges faced by their host communities.
Second only to the US Peace Corps in scale, KOICA/World Friends Korea has sent 50,000 volunteers since 1990. As of 2014, KOICA was active in 96 partner countries and the number of new volunteer assignments in 2014 was 4,860.
We look forward to working with our colleagues at KOICA/World Friends Korea in a spirit of mutual collaboration and partnership. We share a common vision – a better world through volunteerism and sharing. Friends of Korea is firmly committed to the concept that ‘soft diplomacy’ can and does make a significant difference in the world today by bringing people together.

- To promote sustainable development in host countries to reduce poverty and improve people’s living standards.
- To foster deep understanding between Korea and partner countries and strengthen friendly ties.
- To provide opportunities for self-fulfillment and growth to become active global citizens.
