Giving Back - renewing a commitment

Over the years, Friends of Korea has engaged in a variety of service projects, perhaps, most notably, the partnership in 2001 with Habitat for Humanity in which Friends of Korean members donated nearly $10,000 to support a building project in Taegu.  More than two dozen former Peace Corps Korea volunteers and their families were among the 9,000 volunteers involved with the Jimmy Carter International Work Project.  Many members of Friends of Korea, of course, are active in their local communities supporting social service organizations providing a variety of support and services to those in need.

At the November 2014 Board meeting, members of the board expressed support for a more organized approach to service and philanthropy and so the 'Giving Back' initiative was launched.  The goal of this initiative is to move FOK to a deeper level of engagement with the many Korean communities and institutions active in the US.

Since this initiative was launched in the fall of 2014, more than $30,000 has been donated. Recipients have included:
  • Los Angeles, 2014: Korean American Family Services
  • Boston, 2015: National Assn of Korean American Inter-Cultural Family Mission & the Korean American Senior Citizen Assn
  • Washington, DC 2016: Virginia Korean American Disabled People’s Assn
  • Ann Arbor, 2017: The Nam Center for Korean Studies at the University of Michigan
  • Portage, Michigan, 2017: Korean Kids and Orphanage Outreach Mission (KKOOM)
  • Annandale, VA, 2018: Korean Community Center Campaign
  • New York, 2018: Community Inclusion and Development Alliance & the Esther Ha Foundation
  • San Francisco, 2019: Korean War Memorial Foundation
  • New York, 2019: Bronx Charter School for Better Learning

There are so many ways we can continue to give back to Korea.  We can support worthy social service organizations here in the US that are addressing the needs of the Korean immigrant population. We can support the educational aspirations of Korean scholars interested in coming to the US to further their education.  We can support young Americans interested in going to Korea to learn more about Korean culture and history.  These are just a few examples of what we might consider.
